Scrappy Quilt

This quilt was such a fun scrap buster and used up plenty of leftover charm squares and smaller scraps. Even the batting was assembled from scraps!

For the quilting, I did a basic meander with a few loops thrown in for fun. I struggled a bit in the beginning with the needle falling out. Thankfully, my machine wasn't damaged. The problem corrected itself. I'm still not sure if it was a faulty needle or not installed correctly or (most likely) I was being too aggressive in how I was moving the quilt under the needle.

This will be a donation quilt through my guild. I hope to finish up the binding soon.

Fabric Challenge - Getting Started

The MQG announced the fabric challenge for QuiltCon 2024 in Raleigh (!!!). I am excited by my design and working with these colors.

I ordered the Windham Artisan Cotton in Aqua/Blue, Red/Royal, and Apple Green/Chartreuse  and think they will look really amazing together.

Piecing has begun. I've spent several weeks quilting my Magenta Fractal quilt so it is nice to get back to piecing.

Looking ahead to quilting, does anyone know what colors of Aurifil match best to these fabrics?

Summer of Joy Check-in

Now that summer is officially here, it seems like a good time to look at how my Seaglass earning is doing and to make any adjustments. The Summer Lovin Seaglass SAL hosted by Kitty @nightquilter and Allie @exhaustedoctupus. They are terrific hosts and have provided lots of help and guidance along the way.

You can read the details behind what I am tracking on my kick-off post. I earned a few more pieces of Seaglass between taking the photo above and writing this post. Here is an overview on how it is going:

  • I'm earning seaglass pieces at the rate expected for Green - Handwork,  Aqua - Swimming, and Blue - Reading. These are activities I would do anyway so it is fun to track but earning a piece of seaglass isn't necessarily an incentive.
  • Since I was busy quilting my Magenta Fractal for several weeks, I did put it aside one day purposely to have fun making a new pool bag and thus earned my first Red - Small project creativity seaglass piece.
Earned several seaglass pieces with our weekend on a lake with family
  • I have earned more Navy - Adventure and Purple - Friends and Family - than I had expected. A trip to NJ to see family helped make that happen. These are the colors I want to dominate the quilt at the end of the year so more work to do here. When I look back on the summer, these are the memories I will hold close.
  • Mustard yellow- Pickleball and biking - and Yellow - Date night - need some focus. Weather has been a bit of a factor but I can't allow that to be an issue.

I put a call-out in my newsletter for some scraps of Alison Glass fabric - thanks Amanda for the beauties you sent my way! I really appreciate it and can't wait for them to show up in my seaglass jar of joy.

New Pool Bag!

One of the ways I can earn seaglass pieces in the Summer Lovin' Seaglass SAL is with mini quilts and small projects. After spending weeks quilting my Magenta Fractal , a quick finish was called for!

Using some lightweight canvas I had in my stash, I made a bag using Noodlehead's Wide Open Pouch tutorial in the large size. I really love this bright fun print. I swim each morning in the summer and needed something to keep stuff organized in my swim bag.

I've made dozens of bags with this tutorial in the past so this was a fun, fast finish!

Magenta Fractal Quilting Complete

I've been working on ruler quilting my magenta fractal quilt for two weeks - an hour or so a day. In my last post on my magenta fractal quilt, I whined on how long it was taking 😉 and also discussed how I might quilt the 'ghosted' fractal areas.

After testing thread colors, I decided to stick with coordinating color. Since the lines in the magenta go in a different direction then the lines quilted in the light pink, maintaining the direction of the quilting lines makes the ghost areas pop even with coordinating thread.

Next step is to finish burying threads then block and add a facing.

Discovered Cross-stitch Projects

Before my quilting addiction began, I was very much into counted cross-stitch. I made many projects - finishing most of them and hung them in my home or gave as gifts. Recently when sorting out a closet, I found 4 cross-stitch kits which were purchased almost 20 years ago - each for $8!

Almost twenty years ago!

They were purchased during a trip to the Wright Brothers National Park in Kitty Hawk, NC. (I've got photos at this park where my kids are quite young.) At some point, I completed the work on one lighthouse - the Currituck lighthouse which is in Corolla, NC.

When we were at the beach early May, I started the work on the Hatteras lighthouse which is located in Buxton, NC. and I hope to finish it this summer.

The kits contained everything one needed, including the needle. Matching up the thread strand with the right color name was quite difficult so I may have taken a bit of liberty with what thread color is used where!

Magenta Fractal Update

I entered my Magenta Fractal quilt into the Pantone "just the top" challenge. I basted the top, outlined the piecing 1/8" from seam with coordinating color thread. I also quilted in some ghost of where the piecing could have continued into the bottom of the quilt top. After that, the quilt was put in time-out while I thought about the quilting.

After much consideration, I decided on straight lines within the piecing in coordinating thread following the angle of the piecing itself. At first, I started with my walking foot which looked great but left behind a gazillion threads to bury. Switching to a ruler foot gives is quicker and eliminates the need to burying a lot of threads - there are some but not nearly so much.

All the magenta is done and now I am close to the finishing the light pink. After that, I will be moving on to the ghosted light pink in likely the lighter thread color.

I am really looking forward to the quilting being down so I can move onto other projects. I really enjoy the look of a quilt which is heavily quilted and I'm glad I chose that for this quilt although it is taking a longggggggggg time!

My goal for June is to work on quilting my Magenta Pantone Fractal quilt. I've got a quilting plan that involved lots of straight lines. I started quilting using my walking foot - resulting in lots of threads to bury - but have now switched to my ruler foot. The magenta colorway is done and my plan is to have the light pink color quilted in June.

Now it is your turn to link up - what is your goal for this month?   The One Monthly Goal accomplishment linkup will be available on June 24.  Make sure you add a link to this OMG post so others can find the OMG link-up from your blog.  Let's make that easy -  just paste this into your post:
