Bag It - Linkup time!

I just love making these boxy bags and sent my daughter off to college with this one made from a really fun modern fabric.  (For more information, see tips on making boxy bags.)

Welcome to the second official link-up party post for Elm Street Quilts Bag It 2016!!  (This linky is also available from the Bag It entry page.)

I just can't wait to see what everyone links up!

Bags completed during the Elm Street Quilts Bag It event (September 19 through December 16, 2016) need to be shared  through any of the options listed below and then entered into the linky below.   The options for sharing are:

  • shared on Instagram tagged with #elmstreetquiltsBagIt

  • posted on your blog with links back to Elm Street Quilts

If you don't use Instagram, Facebook or have a blog, you can just upload the photo from your computer or  email  me ( elmstreetquilts at gmail dot com ) and I'll do it for you.  Linking from Flickr is fine as well.

Your photo can contain multiple bags - each bag counts as an unique entry.  (You'll record how many bags are in the photo during the link up!)

Please review Bag It Participant Guidelines before linking.

Thanks for linking up!

Slipping through my fingers...

Slipping Through my Fingers

Slipping through my fingers all the time

I try to capture every minute

Not familiar with the song?  Here is a video version from the Mama Mia movie and a link to the actual full lyrics.  Go take a listen and then read the lyrics - I'll wait.

Beautiful isn't it?  If you are lucky enough to be a parent, you'll see yourself and your child somewhere in that song.

But why this quilt and that song?

My Slipping Through My Fingers quilt is my entry in the Art With Fabric blog hop hosted by Alida @ Twelo Quilting

The challenge was too choose a piece of art, music, movie etc and make a project inspired by your selection.  I choose Slipping Through My Fingers, by Abba.

The design of the quilt represents the growing up of my daughter - wrapped close to the family for many years, many twists and turns and then she becomes an adult and goes off to college, ready and excited to make memories of her very own.

Along the path of my square spiral, I  used my FMQ foot to write a series of words that represent milestones and memories of her growing up.

Slipping Through My Fingers

It is hard to capture this in a photo but they read.....
first smile...mama dada.....naps....first tooth...rollover...crawl...first steps...dress up ...preschool...playground...kindergarten...best friends...tooth fairy...reading Narnia...dance class...girls weekend...disney...middle school...Harry Potter ...class trip...braces...school dances...writing stories...nanowrimo...tap dancing...sister hugs... history trip...outer banks ...high school... writing and more writing...college visits...on pointe...prom...senior year...graduation....freshman

The binding of the quilt was chosen deliberately - it helps to carry her path up through the edge of the quilt and off into the world.

It all begins by first steps and dress up - which is - if you think about it - a child's first real taste at independence and learning confidence to pursue one's dreams.

This doll (baby Ab) and stuff animal in the photo below were some of her treasures, always at her side when she was little.

Slipping Through My Fingers

Thanks so much for stopping by!  Thanks Alida for organizing such a fun challenge.  Really pulled me to think outside the 'quilty' box.

QAL with solids

I really enjoy quilting with solids and are using AMB Solids in two different mystery QALs with new clues each month!

The first is one sponsored by American Made Brand called My Land.  Block 6 is called Canyon Lands.

(Colors are much richer in person than I'm able to capture in this photo.)

And here are my six blocks.  I am downsizing each of these to a 6'' block and turning them - when feasible - into a paper pieced block.

Next up with the Meadow Mystery QAL from Cheryl @ Meadow Mist Designs.   For this mystery QAL, all I had to get started were really excellent directions on which fabric should be light / medium / dark and some advise on what fabrics would sit next to another fabric so you could validate contrast.

I've downsized such that these HST are 2 1/2 '' unfinished.  (The pattern calls for 4 1/2 ''.)   Here are the September and October blocks.

Have a wonderful day! Patty
