Rainbow Spools

I've got a new quilt flimsy!

Fat Quarter Shop asked if I'd like to sew up one of their short cut layer cake patterns - this is called Layer Cake Spools!  You can download the free pattern here and checkout the tutorial video!

The pattern contains instructions for 3 different sizes.  I went with something slightly smaller - ~ 45 x 60 - but may go back and add one more column before quilting.  I'm thinking this one will be a gift!

I really love the fabric - Ruby Star Society Hole Punch Dot. (affiliate link)   The colors are beautiful and it was tough choosing which ones to use in the quilt!  (One more column means I get to choose 4 more colors!)

One of my favorite things to do is chain piece so I enjoyed the sewing process.  Each 1/4 spool block was 8" unfinished.  The pattern called for a bit more trimming than I'm used to but it went together quickly.  I choose to press my seams flat.

For the layout, I chose to bring all the color together but a more scrappy layout would have been really fun too.

A picnic at our local park gave me some great photo shoot locations!  Want to make one of your very own -  you can download the free pattern here and checkout the tutorial video!

One Monthly Goal July Finishes

Ready to link up your July finishes?
Don't panic - this link-up is open until July 31 at 11:55 pm ET.

Want to see everyone's goals for the month - check out the July goal page!

My goal for July was to quilt my wall hanging.  The quilting is all done - and I went really dense on some areas and used several shades of thread to add interest!  Since this quilt will be entered into a challenge, I'm not ready to share photo of the finished quilt so just a sneak peek for now!

Now it's your turn to link up!  Please add a link to this OMG post so others can follow where you are linking.   Let's make that easy -  just paste this into your post:

Community Quilt

Each year, the MQG welcomes guilds to create a community quilt to hang at QuiltCon - after the show, the quilt is donated to charity.  The theme for the current challenge is color shift.   (Read more about the MQG challenge.)

I joined the committee this year and led the design of the quilt.  The quilt will require 120 FPP blocks and members were handed out block kits at our last meeting.

I took 2 kits and completed my blocks one evening.  They were a quick sew - perhaps because I was the one who wrote up really awesome instructions (LOL).  The colors per block were planned ahead of time but the quilter had the flexibility to color (with fabric) the unit as they liked.

I've not been given the authorization to trim the blocks yet - we are going to do them all at once on assembly day - so I played a bit with a photo editor to get a sense how they will come together.

Other kits had brighter fabrics - looking forward to seeing (and sharing) the final quilt!

My Kawandi Project

The latest issue of Curated Quilts had a wonderful article on making Kawandi quilts.  Kawandi quilts are assembled from the outer edge in by tuning over the edges of scrap fabric and stitching down by hand.

I decided to give the project a try and put to work a bunch of precious scraps saved from several quilts made with fabric by Alison Glass and a light blue solid for the backing.

My plan is to use several colors of thread through the project, starting with this blue.

Texture is what this quilt is all about.  It is such a pleasure to sit and stitch - perfect for the back porch on a summer day.

2022 Mid-year Check-in

Yvonne @QuiltingJetgirl has a link-up to check in with our yearly goals now that we've passed the half-way point.

Sanity

My goals for the year (see this post) for 2022 were based on the word simplify with the intent to shift my energy to stuff that is important to me.  The craziness of the world around me continues and it is very calming when I can devote energy to things that bring me joy instead of focusing on the scary stuff.  Stitching my quilt Sanity was a great way to sit and relax.

Illusions

In December, I had 5 very specific goals and then I added another one earlier this year.  So how am I doing?

Make at least one quilt to submit to QuiltCon 2023.  At this point, I've got one complete (Illusions) and another being quilted.  This second one is in response to the QuiltCon fabric challenge and I am excited to share more once the quilt is done.  This goal is met!

Join a QAL to create a charity quilt only using fabric from stash.  I joined the HRT QAL with the intent to sew along from stash BUT I realize now that the block size I chose means this will be a baby/incubator sized quilt.  This wasn't my original intent of the goal so time to rethink.

Submit a quilt design for publication.  I've submitted one quilt design so far (haven't heard back if it is accepted) and plan to submit another to the QuiltCon magazine.   This goal is met!

Play with color to make a improv mini quilt. Nothing on this yet.  Frankly, I forgot all about it!

Blog 1-2 times weekly and continue to host OMG (but without sponsors.)  So far, so good.  There is still strong interest in OMG and eliminating sponsors made this very simple for me to do!  I started using a bullet journal (see my post) to both keep track of my quilting and my blog schedule and it is helping me with this goal.

Make a group quilt for submission to QuiltCon.  (This was the goal I added!).  Very happy to say that this goal is in good shape.   Friends recruited, blocks arrived and assembled and the quilting has begun!

Spring Coat

Although not a hard and fast goal, I've tried to adopt the idea of using my scraps right away in another project.  For example, scraps from my first quilt coat became the back of my second coat (above) and then made an appearance in some zip bags!  Doing this fits nicely into the simplify idea because it means I don't need to create an organization system for scraps - just use them up!

Thinking through my goals has been a good exercise for me.

Curated Quilts Mini Gallery - Sanity

The latest issue of Curated Quilts arrived in my mailbox this week and my quilt Sanity was returned!

The theme for issue 20 was Utility and the magazine is filled with some beautiful gallery quilts and includes a great tutorial for making a Kawandi quilt.

My friend Frances @offkilterquilt is a cover-gal with the mention of her article on Why Quilt Labeling Matters!

I enjoy the regular challenges issued by Curated Quilts.  Sanity is the 3rd mini that's been included - two others -  Red Alert and There's a Trapezoid in there Somewhere - were in previous issues.

Fibonacci Blanket Update 2

My side panel is done!

This is panel 2 of 3.  The center panel measures 55" long and about 15" wide (70 stitches) while the newly completed side panel measures 20" wide (92 stitches).  The top and the bottom have a couple of rows of K2 P1 ribbing and the side panel start with 5 stitches of ribbing on one side.

There are two ways I can join the two panels together using the mattress stitch.  The first is to align the stripes.

The second is to flip the center panel.

I like the version where the stipes align so my final panel will match the color distribution of the panel just finished with the ribbing on the opposite side.   (Putting the ribbing on the side really makes a difference in controlling how well the panels lay flat.)

Previous progress posts on April 11 and April 27.

The colors are following a pattern - dark gray to blue to light gray to white to light gray to blue to dark gray - and the width of the strip follows the Fibonacci series, namely 1", 2", 3", 5",  and 8".  I am using Berroco cotton yarn in color ways Waterman (1685), Tiverton (1623), Gadwall (1608) and Bluffs (1600).  The yarn is wonderful to use and the knitted piece is very soft! (affiliate link)

I've really enjoyed my knitting project!  Knitting a blanket in panels means it doesn't take too long to finish a row and it is very portable!  I've taken my knitting to guild meetings, coffee with friends, and spent many an evening knitting while watching t.v.
