30 Days of Improv - Week 4 Check-in

I participated in the #30daysofimprovqal hosted by @shannonfraserdesigns and @broadclothstudio.  Our final week was all about curves.  I confess to not spending as much time with these as I did the other blocks and I'm - no surprise - not thrilled with the results!

But that's ok!  I've got plenty of fabric left so I can make more blocks or expand the ones I have!  Pictured below are each week's blocks.
After clearing off my design wall, I've started arranging them - you can see what I have so far in the photo below.  Improv is an interesting process.  While I really enjoy the creating of the piece parts and seeing what unexpected surprises show up,  I find the process of assembling into something that looks interesting to be very difficult.

I plan to leave these blocks up and visible but walk away from the project for a bit.  I'll share again once the quilting in underway.  Wish me luck!

Ottoman Rings Update

Back in early June, I took an Ottoman Rings workshop with Tighe Flanagan.  During the workshop, I sewed the lower quadrant of the quilt using a dark Essex linen.

While I loved the fabric combination, this pattern requires a lot of marking and the linen was just too dark for any of my marks to be visible.

So I switched to a lighter fabric.  But my progress was slow for two reasons.  First, there are tons of partial seams and it was a bit fussy (for me) to sew together.  Second, I attempted to sew by quadrant and found myself spending too much time figuring out my color layout before the sewing could begin.  (Other guild members made all their rings from a single color - such a good idea!)

So I've dumped the machine and moved to hand piecing and am loving it!  Hand piecing is eliminating the need for many of the partial seams - there are still some but a lot easier to deal with.  Plus, sewing gentle curves by hand is much easier than by machine.

I'm keeping the quilt spread across my cutting table and sitting there to sew it together.  Assembly is no longer by quadrants - just putting together the quilt from the center out.  Lots of pieces are marked with their piece number to help me from getting confused on where I am in the pattern - this also means that nothing has been ironed yet!

This will be a wall hanging when I'm done although I might go slightly smaller than the pattern calls for.

30 Days of Improv Week 3

I'm participating in the #30daysofimprovqal hosted by @shannonfraserdesigns and @broadclothstudio.  Week 3 was all about triangles and these blocks were the most fun to make by far!

My favorite bits are the small little triangles - like the tiny one in the block on the upper right.

Gathering all the blocks together for a group picture was fun although one was missing - it slipped off the table and feel into the trash can  :-( but luckily I found it.

One more week of prompts and then I get to assemble these together!

Kawandi Quilt

I gathered all my Alison Glass scraps with a goal of using each fabric only once and embracing the different sizes of the scraps.

I've give my Daylight Halo Go* a workout - stitching on the back porch in the early evening.  The included magnifying glass has made threading a needle quite easy!

To secure down both the middle row and the center row, I ran a line of X stitches along the edges.  I think it also adds some fun interest.

It's a very enjoyable process to just sit and stitch.   Even the back looks cool!

The quilt finished at ~ 12" x  18".  I can most definitely see myself doing another one!

30 Days of Improv QAL Check-in

I'm participating in the #30daysofimprovqal hosted by @shannonfraserdesigns and @broadclothstudio.

Loving my fabric pull!

I went with a different color combinations for this one - using some large scraps and some small ones.  I've not yet used the wasabi so need to work that into week's 3s blocks.

Week 1 was all about string blocks.  Most of my cutting was done with a ruler.  The prompts included adding negative space and going with skinny strips.  I will likely cut these down even further when I get to composing the final piece.

The theme for week 2 was polygons.  These were a lot of fun to assemble.  I expect I'll be cutting these down in the future, especially that bottom one which looks like a mountain range.

It was fun to rearrange them a bit - I'm really enjoying my color pull.

It's not too late to join in and catch up!

HST and HRT August BOM update

I really loved the blocks for both June and July (above) and August (below) from the Modern HST BOM .  I fell a bit behind and batching to do them together worked well!

And all my lovely 8 blocks together in a group shot.  Aren't these fun?

When the QAL started, you were told how many HSTs and HRTs you would need for the whole quilt and you could size them anyway you wanted to get the finish size that would work for you.  My blocks will finish at 8" which means my HST or squares finish at 2".   I made all my HSTs ahead of time and then paper piece the HRT once I see the block.
