New Pool Bag

Summer has arrived!  The pool is open and my daily walk has shifted to be a daily swim.

To carry my things each day, I assembled a quick bag using my Market Basket tutorial.  The outside is 'vegan' leather and the inside is a canvas print from Spoonflower.  The vegan leather was purchased from our guild members destash sale and the canvas print was a freebie.

The bag measures  11" x 4" x 9 1/2" and was as big as I could make it with the supplies I had.   I didn't have enough of the canvas print for the inside pocket so went with a solid.   The bag has a reasonable amount of structure - it will stand up on its own - but might have been better if there were some interfacing.

It was a fun and quick project.  Goggles at the ready, you can find me at the pool.

Illusions - A Finish

I've often admired quilters who create a series of works around a theme and I wanted to give it a try.   The idea is to use regular quilt blocks - in this case the HRT (half-rectangle triangle) - to give an illusion of curves.*  (My Harmony quilt design is another example.)

My quilt Illusions is roughly 28" square.  I used Painters Palette fabric in wasabi and black.  (Wasabi is hard to photograph to get true color.  The indoor photo shown below is closer to the real shade.)

The quilting was done with a walking foot and some ruler work with my FMQ ruler foot to get the denser quilting I wanted inside the HRTs with some variety on the width between the lines.  The black HRTs are not quilted.

I took a deep breath before cutting off a corner to emphasize the curve.  My original plan was a binding with a mitered corner bringing the two colors together.  I struggled to get it to look as I wanted so faced binding it is!

Oceans Away

The MQG's 2022 Make a Difference Challenge prompt is oceans and the challenge will benefit Oceana - a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world's oceans on a global scale.  The deadline to submit a quilt is early August.

My family spends a week each summer at a NC beach and my favorite thing to do is to sit and watch and listen to the waves.

For this challenge, I considered a bunch of different ideas including a more abstract quilt but decided to focus on a sketched wave coloring book style.

I worked with a bunch of scraps and just layered bits of color on using raw edge applique until I found something I liked.

Not sure where this quilting is taking me but I'm enjoying it so far. I may just call this mini Surf's Up!

The challenge in 2021 was trees and I entered a mini Three.

Happy Mail

I love getting happy mail!  Anything to do with quilting - be it fabric or not - counts.

The catalog of show quilts from QuiltCon 2022 arrived this week.  I had 3 quilts in the show and ended up abandoning my plans to attend somewhat at the last minute.  I viewed many of the quilts through the IG posts of others but I really wanted a souvenir of the show so I pre-ordered the catalog.  The quilts are all professional photographed.

Its filled with pages of inspiration - if you need me, I'll be doing a slow page turn through and enjoying every quilt.  (Mine are on pages 62, 114, and 132.  I got a thrill seeing my name in the index.)

Have you heard of a zine?  It is a self-published mini-magazine (the 'zine' is pronounced the same way as the zine in the word magazine).

My friend Frances @offkilterquilt has published her very first zine on Sustainable Quilt Making.  Frances has also authored 2 quilt fiction novels - Margaret Goes Modern and Birds in the Air (affiliate links).  Birds in the Air is the story of a new quilter who discovers quilting and friendship after moving to a new town.   Margaret Goes Modern is a collection of short stories.  I recommend both of them.  Frances has also written a number of middle grade novels - check them out!

Bags from Scraps

I've been working hard to get my scraps organized so they actually get used.  Typically, I store them by project in a plastic bag and then promptly loose the bag!

When I cleaned up after making two different quilt coats (the first and the second), all my scraps and leftover geese and HST stayed piled on the corner of my table and I turned them into two bags!

Such a fun quick process.  I used Noodle-head's wide open pouch tutorial.  The largest maps to her middle size while the smaller one is somewhere between her small and medium.

I love them both!

HST and HRT BOM May update

Block 5 is now done from the Modern HST BOM .   This is absolutely my favorite block so far!

When the QAL started, you were told how many HSTs and HRTs you would need for the whole quilt and you could size them anyway you wanted to get the finish size that would work for you.  My blocks will finish at 8" which means my HST or squares finish at 2".

Here are the other 4 blocks

Check out all the blocks at #modernhstBOM2022.  While most of my quilts are made from my own designs, I always enjoy having a project where someone else tells me what to sew.  My only decision is the fabric!

One Monthly Goal May Link-up

Welcome to May!

New to One Monthly Goal?  Welcome!  To join, share a photo of your project plus, some words about what you want to accomplish in a blog post, an Instagram post (tutorial) or a post on Flickr and add that photo to the link-up.  Return at the end of the month and share your results.  (Results link-up opens for the last 7 days of the month.)

I've been reorganizing my fabric stash and doing a general tidy up of my sewing space.  I've got a bunch of zip bags filled with scraps from specific projects.  For May, I want to turn these scraps into at least one open wide zip bag.

Now it is your turn to link up - what is your goal for this month?   The One Monthly Goal accomplishment linkup will be available on May 25.  Make sure you add a link to this OMG post so others can find the OMG link-up from your blog.  Let's make that easy -  just paste this into your post:
