One Monthly Goal June Finishes

Ready to link up your June finishes?
Don't panic - this link-up is open until June 30 at 11:55 pm ET.

Want to see everyone's goals for the month - check out the June goal page!

My goal for June was to make some progress on my Ottoman Rings wall hanging after my class with Tighe Flanagan earlier in the month.   A lot of the work the picture doesn't show is cutting all the pieces out using templates.  Read more about the quilt and the class here.

Now it's your turn to link up!  Please add a link to this OMG post so others can follow where you are linking.   Let's make that easy -  just paste this into your post:

Surf's Up!

My family spends a week each summer at a NC beach and I enjoy sitting and watching and listening to the waves.  My mini Surf's Up attempts to capture the magic of those waves!

To create, I drew out a coloring book style wave and layer it with various colors of blue using fusible applique.  To secure the fabric layers, I did big stitch quilting.  The walking foot quilting was done after the waves were appliqued which meant threads to be buried.  I could have quilted the background first but my original plan was to quilt the waves with my walking foot.

I'm glad I didn't - I think the hand quilting adds some fun to my piece!

My mini finishes at 12" x 12".

I'll be submitting my quilt to the MQG's 2022 Make a Difference Challenge prompt is oceans and the challenge will benefit Oceana - a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world's oceans on a global scale.  The deadline to submit a quilt is early August.

Square Grapes

The latest Curated Quilts Mini challenge carried a unique color palette and a prompt of 'gap' with a focus on the negative space.  I found scraps in my stash that matched two of the colors and then rounded it out by ordering some Bella Concord color.  (I suddenly seem to have lots of purple solids FQ size or smaller in my stash.)

My design idea was born out of necessity  - letting the fabric I had on hand dictate the design.  Once assembled, I used 40 wt Aurifil variegated thread and added a series of rectangles that interacted with the squares.

The result surprised me - the quilting really made the piece come alive!  I had great difficulty getting a good photo that showed the colors well and this one still isn't right.

My quilt Square Grapes measures 15 1/2" square.

Ottoman Rings Workshop

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of taking a workshop via Zoom with Tighe Flanagan for his Ottoman Rings pattern.    Although it may not look like much, pictured above s is the bottom right quadrant - once it is squared off - for a 24" square wall hanging.

Before the class started, I figured out placement of the rings using a coloring sheet. The pattern is assembled using a series of partial seams and isn't that hard to sew once you get the hang of it- the curves themselves are very gentle.

What I didn't prep ahead of time was transferring marks to the pieces from the templates.  The pattern does require a bit of marking on the pieces to get things lined up and I quickly regretted my choice of a dark linen as a background fabric because it was hard to see my marks.

I'm excited to put this project together but before continuing I plan to do two things.  First, rethink my choice on background fabric - I plan to audition some solid quilting cotton in a lighter color as an alternative.  Second, I will organize the pieces on my design wall for the entire quilt before sitting down to sew.

Tighe is a great teacher and had really helpful videos that walked your through complex assembly.  I can't wait to get this quilt top together!

Scrap Mini Quilts

Let no scrap be left behind!

A mini quilt made from a left over block from my I Believe in Dragons quilt.  This one finishes - once I get the binding on - at 3 1/2" square

I used scraps leftover from my quilt coats to make this mini (7" x 7" ) and a couple of bags.

Finally a set of leftover small HST from some projects - not sure which one! - makes a fun mini which finished at 9 1/2" square.

These were fun little projects with no real purpose other than to relax and sew!

Pencil Sleeve

I've been looking for a way to better keep track of my quilting projects plus something that would work a little bit as a journal of projects completed.  The MQG had a seminar recently about bullet journaling which helped convince me to give the dotted grid a try.

I made myself a pencil sleeve to keep my markers all in one place.  I really like this design because it lays flat when open on my desk but you can also tuck the flap in to keep things all secure.

I used my favorite Alison Glass scraps and based my pencil sleeve on a tutorial I found here.  I went with a piece 3 1/2'' wide and about 15" long and used fusible fleece.  For my next one, I am going to try tapering the flap a bit so it fits better.

And in case you are interested, this was the journal and markers I purchased (affiliate links).  The paper quality is really nice!
