My Quilts at QuiltCon Phoenix

My Quilts went to QuiltCon but I stayed home.

I was scheduled to go - workshop, lectures, hotel reservations and airline tickets were all in hand.  But after several days of agonizing decision processing, I decided to stay home.  Because of the health of a family member, I just couldn't take the risk of bringing Covid into the home.

But my quilts were there!

I Believe in Dragons was part of the Small Quilt category.  (Read more about it here.)

Left Turn was part of the Hexagon Challenge.  (Read more about it here.)

Boomerang was part of the Piecing Catgory.  Boomerang was also featured in QuiltCon Together in 2021.  (Read more about it here.)

From everything I saw on IG and heard from friends who attended, the show was spectacular and filled with amazing quilts.  I'm honored and proud to have 3 quilts in the show.

Now, mark my calendar for QuiltCon 2023 in Atlanta!

Orange Slice

My tips for getting out of a sewing funk is to start sewing something - anything!  After finishing a whole bunch of projects I decided to make a bunch of drunkards' path blocks from a beautiful monochromatic FQ bundle of Kona blues I'd received as a gift.

Everything was pieced somewhat randomly with no plan of the final layout.  Once I had all the blocks done, I displayed them on my floor and decided it need a pop of orange.

But how best to incorporate the orange?  I experimented and tried different layouts but it seemed to just resemble a bit hot mess.  Not the vibe I was going for!

So my first layout was too boring and the second one too messy.

I decided to flip the whole quilt idea around and go with a clamshell - one of my bucket quilts.  

I did have to seam rip and resew about a third of the drunkard's path blocks to get the right layout which while not fun, was the kind of mindless sewing I need to move beyond the funk.

My flimsy is about 32'' square.  I may either make this a baby quilt and do spiral quilting perhaps centered on the orange slice or have fun with FMQ and rulers and maybe some hand quilting - doing different things in each clamshell.  If I do that, I'll likely turn it into a wall hanging!

2021 Temperatures Is Done

The final stitches went into the binding of my 2021 Temperature Quilt this weekend and I'm very excited about how it turned out!  My favorite part is the upper left corner - all those winter 'blues' are just so pretty together.

The quilting was done with a walking foot done at a 60 degree angle using a light gray thread.  I briefly considered using lots of different thread colors as I had on my 2020 quilt but decided to go with a simpler approach.  I also considered another round of quilting to make the spacing between lines even denser but decided it looked just fine the way it was.

The temperature scale represented in fabric colors can be found as part of the binding.  The quilt is 36'' x 32".  

My 2021 design documents both the high and low temperature in a block which finishes 1 1/2 '' x 2''.  The improv strip is 1/4'' wide and records the low temperatures.  

Every month takes 2 columns - the 1 through 15 in first column and then 16 through end of month in the second column.  Filler blocks are added to square off the quilt.  The thin strips - 1/4'' wide - are randomly inserted and run 'vertically' for odd days and 'horizontally' for even days.

I plan to hang this quilt in my husband (the Atmospheric Scientist)'s home office where I can see it everyday.  My 2020 quilt (below) is hanging in my home office / sewing space. 

I'm using the exact same fabric that I did for my 2020 Temperature quilt.   I made myself a mini-quilt to show off my temperature grid.  Oranges are 80s, yellows are 70s and sew on.  The fabrics used are Painters Palette solids:

100+ is Sangria, 95+ is Real Red, 90+ is Poppy red, 85+ is Burnt Orange, 80+ is Tangerine, 75+ is Pencil Yellow, 70+ is Bright Yellow, 65+ is Apple Green, 60+ is Mint, 55+ is Bright Aqua, 50+ is Turquoise, 45+ is China Blue, 40+ is Lapis, 35+ is Purple, 30+ is Amethyst, and any temp is the 20s is Royalty.

HST and HRT Fun

While most of my quilts are made from my own designs, I always enjoy having a project where someone else tells me what to sew.  My only decision is the fabric!

This year, I decided to jump into the Modern HST BOM - block 1 is now available.  The QAL is fun because it tells you ahead of time how many HST and HRT you will need for the whole quilt.  Plus, you choose how big you want it to be.   My block will finish at 8" which means my HST are 2".  (I've seen other quilts where the blocks will be 24" and the HST are 6".)

While I made a few HRT after creating a paper piece pattern, I decided I could get the same effect and skip a step by going creating a paper piece pattern in the shape of 2 HRTs sewn together.  This works because my fabric choices are not scrappy.

I've now made ahead all my HSTs and a few HRTs.  Check out all the blocks at #modernhstBOM2022.

Left Turn

Introducing Left Turn!!

The inspiration for Left Turn came from the MQG hexagon challenge for QuiltCon 22.  I've only done one project with hexis (a pillow) and decided to go big with my design instead of going small.

I went a bit out of my comfort zone on the fabric colors - wasabi and purple - and really enjoyed playing with a new combination.

The quilting was all done with my walking foot using matching thread.  It took a long time but it was really worth it to have all that fun texture.  The quilt measures 58" x 58".

My favorite bit was carrying the filler quilting for the smallest hexagon shape into the negative space on the left.  

Overall, the quilt was an experiment in conquering some unique quilt math, playing with some new to me color combinations and stretching myself on the use of negative space.  The resulting almost 3D effect was an unexpected and delightful bonus.

I'm excited to share that Left Turn will hang at QuiltCon 2022 which happens next week!
