The challenge offered several categories of possible entries (plus an amazing sponsor list.) While my original goal was to enter a finished quilt, I'm going to enter the quilt top category since I came to a point where I couldn't decide how best to quilt.
My quilt (that doesn't yet have a name) is based on a Flowsnake Fractal. (A fractal is a never-ending pattern. I love a good math quilt.)

The piecing was done using templates and were an easy shape to cut and sew. That said, my first take at a quilt top wasn't balanced right - it had too much empty space that wasn't helping the design. After seeking some advise from some quilting friends, I broke out the seam ripper and made some modifications.

Once basted, I outlined the path through the fractal with my walking foot and also quilted some ghost shapes in the negative space.

But now what?
Do I call it done? Hard for me to do because I am most definitely in the "quilt it to death club".
Do I add some hand quilting - I'm thinking X's in the magenta color?
Do I do some straight line quilting across the whole quilt?
Thankfully, entering just a quilt top is an option for the challenge so I've a path forward while I stew on what to do next! I'll be linking up here.
Really like this! Can't suggest anything else in the quilting department, but I know you will no doubt make it beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOooh, I love the ghost shapes added into the negative space. I like your idea of adding some hand quilting. What about hand quilting details in one color and another quilting motif added to the second color - say some additional straight lines or another motif you are comfortable sewing?

ReplyDeleteIt looks amazing & I'm with you in that I find it hard on knowing what to quilt on some of my quilts. Think maybe.....hang it in full view for a while and inspiration will come as to whether it needs more or is OK as is. Hard one & wish I could be of more help. Lovely whatever you do. ReplyDeleteWhat a nice challenge entry, Patty! Your use of the color, and contrast, is really good. And that fractal design... wow! I've never seen that before. It turned out well. I can understand your dilemma about quilting it. I can't clearly envision quilting patterns, though like you, I'd be inclined to over quilt it. Really, the quilt can probably use less quilting because the pieced design is so intricate-looking. Maybe that's your answer... keep it simple.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous quilt! The quilting is pretty and sufficient, but I know that whatever you add will only make it more pretty. "Fractal", a new word for me, it is cool.
