Progress update on my hand-piecing

I shared some observations on my hand piecing project about a month ago (read it here).  Once I got my base blocks done and all assembled in a quilt top, I decided that maybe I was having so much fun that I ought to make more blocks.

So I did.

I am still trying to decide on the perfect dimensions for the right side and then it will be time to baste and get this all quilted.  Can't wait!

February Temperatures

I've set about on a year long project to document the daily high temperature with a hexie.  (See more information here.) 

January and February are done and I'm pleased that I've managed to stay relatively current - essentially I make and attached the hexie in the same day.

The bottom row is January 1 through 15, next row January 16 through 31.   That top row is February 16 through 28.  I am considering a low volume background and will fill in the rest of that row.

That orange hexie in the sea of blues, aquas and green was an 80 degree day we got in mid-February.  Go NC!

Here is the mapping of color to temperature range.  These hexies are now sewn together in one long strip , shown in the photo above.

Next step is to get ahead of this a bit and make lots of hexies so keeping current isn't quite as much work each day.

EPP - My projects

Last summer, I bought a giant mini-charm pack that contained all of the colors of the Paintbrush Studios solids line.  What did I do with it?  I made hexies!  And then made more hexies using a not-quite-as-giant mini charm pack of another fabric line.

I'm sewing them together in a circle, randomly pulling each hexie as I go.  I'm quite happy with the results.  This currently measures roughly 14'' square with about 50 hexies yet to attach. (Here is what it looked like mid-January.)   I've got a plan.  We'll see if it makes sense once I get all of the hexies added!

I've been wanting to try a shape that wasn't a hexie.    This is my version of the beautiful block called Dresden's Dreaming (pattern here) from Aurifil's 2018 BOM.

I used scraps and really like my sunflower.  I've not yet cut the background down to a square because I am thinking about adding a stem and leaves and making this a mini quilt.  I'll be linking up my sunflower block here.

A Bit of Knitting

I entered 2017 with a goal of always having a project ready for a needle so that I could take advantage of any time in the evenings watching tv or when I needed a few minutes to sit quietly.  I do need variety to keep me interested so I've prepped some applique as well as queued up some knitting projects.

I finished my hat on Saturday and took it out for a spin on Sunday when temperatures were in the low 20s.  The hat kept my ears nice and warm and happy.  (I made the same hat in a different shade of blue for my dad for Christmas.)

We anticipated a major snow storm for days leading up to a disappointing overnight downpour of rain and sleet followed by a bit more than an inch of snow Saturday morning.
The snow made things pretty but the ice left the roads treacherous. (Side roads rarely get plowed here in central NC.  We generally wait until temperatures climb above freezing and for things to melt.)

Now on the needles is the same hat pattern but in green.  This hat will have a Harry Potter color scheme in it.  I'll share more when I'm done.
