Quilt Con is the Modern Quilt Guild's annual event - a quilt show, combined with classes, lectures and vendors making for an amazing time.
Quilt Con 2019 was held in Nashville and I was able to attend for 3 of the 4 days. I had so much fun and wanted to share my experiences across a couple of blog posts.
This first post will focus on the fact that I had a quilt in the show. And there is a giveaway so keep reading!
Yes, me. (Still a bit amazed by this, honestly.)
Michael Miller had a challenge category for the 2019 show that involved making a quilt from a specific set of fabrics plus any additional Cotton Couture solids you wanted to add. My friend Paige sent me a bundle of fabrics in the mail and challenged me to do the challenge.
Inspired by the Crown of Thorns block my friend Frances was working on (and the pattern I was writing up for her), I decided to use those fabrics to make a modern interpretation of the crown of thorns block.
The result is my quilt Briar Rose. (And no, I didn't purposely choose a sweater that coordinated with my quilt.)
Briar Rose hung at QuiltCon with all the other Michael Miller entries and it was a lot of fun to see how others used the same fabric and came up with very different results. (My friend Paige won 2nd place in this category - see her quilt!)
Now, I will confess to have spent time stalking my own quilt. I waited to the end of the day to catch an empty aisle for the above photo. But the most fun was watching people take photos of the quilt, read the blurb I had written and step back and admire it. It gave me quite a thrill.
Equally as exciting, this quilt will appear in the March issue of Make Modern magazine!!! You can make your very own version in the colors of your choice.
And this is where the giveaway comes in - leave me a comment on this blog post and tell me if you have ever entered a quilt in a show. I'll randomly choose a winner Sunday evening at 8pm ET. If you are a no-reply commenter, please leave your email address.
Congratulations to Kathleen!! She is the lucky winner of the Make Modern subscription. (updated 3/4)
The winner will receive a 6-month subscription to Make Modern magazine!
Quilt Con part 2 will post soon!
Have a wonderful day!
Patty
Congratulations! Great design. I have entered quilts in guild shows but never a big show like Quilt Con.
ReplyDeleteI have never entered a quilt in a show but I was inspired by all the quilts at QuiltCon. I might be ready for it! Love my Make Modern subscription.
ReplyDeleteI’ll have a quilt in our upcoming (this weekend) quilt exhibit. My modern group is hosting but I’m still freaking out about prep. LOL. Love your quilt!
ReplyDeleteI've never had a quilt entered in a show. I guess I am too critical of my sewing. I just give them as gifts. rita_l_39212@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteHow fun to have a quilt hanging in the show. Several years ago I entered a quilt in our very small county fair, but I've never entered a quilt in a show.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt in my avatar was hanging at an AQS show in Nashville (2003 I think). It was part of a guild challenge, but I was as excited as if I had been juried in on my own! I like your interpretation of the block.
ReplyDeleteI think it's awesome that you coordinated with the quilt. ☺ It's a great piece, and congrats for having it in the show. I have not entered a quilt....maybe someday.....
ReplyDeleteYou have a beautiful quilt and I know you were proud to have it in the quilt show. I have entered quilts in a local town fair and had the same feeling!! I have won, first, second, and third places, and loved getting judges comments on them.
ReplyDeleteI love your quilt, Patty. I have never entered a quilt, but sometimes when I'm sewing I pretend to be a judge. Lol!
ReplyDeleteAre you sure you didn't coordinate that sweater? ;)
Patty, this is so exciting. Your design is very well done! I haven’t entered a quilt in a show. The closest I’ve come is 10 years of 4-H sewing for the county fair when I was young.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on having that beautiful quilt admired by so many. I have never entered a quilt.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! What an honor. I have never submitted my quilts anywhere but my local guilds shows.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt. I have entered in our local guild and our modern guild is doing an exhibit in a museum in March and April. Excited and nervous-love learning new techniques and patterns.
ReplyDeleteThe only time my quilts have ever been in a show was when our quilt ministry group hosted a small show in conjunction with the annual fall harvest festival held at the grange hall across the road from our church. No judging or ribbons, just fun!
ReplyDeleteNo, I have not entered a quilt in a quilt show. However, I obtained info to possibly enter a quilt at one close to me in the future. Thank you, peterstankovich@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your entry being shown at Quiltcon! I've never entered a quilt in any show but I've been tempted...maybe one day I'll get my nerve up ;-) Thanks for the giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! I have never entered a quilt show, but have entered the state fair and won first, second and third place ribbons.
ReplyDeleteI have entered my quilts in small local shows, nothing as big as that one!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt, great design.
I have never entered a quilt in a show, mainly because I question if my binding would pass muster. I cut my bindings at 2.5" and sew on the front with a 3/8" seam and when I flip to the back, the binding is wider than the front - sometimes by quite a bit....when I cut the binding at 2 1/4" then sometimes I have to pull to get it flipped and cover the stitching line. so much trouble getting perfect bindings!
ReplyDeleteI've never entered a quilt in a show, but my LQS hangs some of mine as samples.
ReplyDeleteI have had quilts in our local guild shows, but I’ve never submitted to a juried show. Your quilt is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI once entered a mini quilt in a local show....a good learning experience.
ReplyDeleteYours is a great interpretation!
Congratulations on your quilt show entry! So exciting. I've never entered a show before but have had one exhibited at a local bed turning.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your beautiful quilt at Quiltcon & publication! I am just a beginner, so no entries yet! Thank you, Susan
ReplyDeletePatti - it is a great quilt and fun to see it at Quilt Con. It was also fun to meet you in person! I kind of kept low a bit after my fall (I had a badly bruised eye) but I persisted and still did a lot. You look so happy next to your quilt - congrats again on entering the challenge!
ReplyDeleteLoved finally meeting you in person! Congratulations on having a quilt hanging in the show. :)
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is awesome and I think I will have to make one! I love that you "match" your quilt. I had a quilt accepted into the National Juried show here in Canada a couple of years ago....and, yes, I stood around "creeping" the crowd :)

ReplyDeleteCongratulations Patty!
ReplyDeleteI have never entered a completed quilt in a show. However, I did have a quilt top as part of a display of Round Robin quilts that my quilt guild did.
How excited to be in the show and congratulations on being selected for the magazine! No, I've never entered a quilt in a show...one day I'd love to though!
ReplyDeleteI have entered my quilts in various shows because I like to see the comments made if they are judged. I won a blue ribbon at the County Fair once. I love your quilt. It is now on my must make list and quite possibly might become a squirrel!
ReplyDeleteLove your quilt! I have never entered a quilt in a show, not yet 😉
ReplyDeleteYes I have had quilts in a regional show before. Not nearly as cool as having one in QuiltCon! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! The fabrics, piecing an quilting are an interesting combination that brings viewers back for extra consideration. No, I haven't and probably won't enter contests. That would be so much angst, I think.
ReplyDeleteConnie
Nope! Never entered a quilt show. Only gone to two ... a local one in Moses Lake over 20 years ago and the Sisters quilt show two years ago now. I've thought about trying, then life happens ...
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is beautiful and so is the Michael Miller collection. I have never entered a quilt show, but someday......
ReplyDeleteHow exciting to see your quilt in the show! Congratulations! I've entered small guild shows, and won a few ribbons there, and best of show once. I also entered a contest in "Mianiature Quilts" magazine, years ago, and that little quilt ended up in a book and in their exhibit at Internation Quilt Festival in Houston. I admit it- I also stalked my quilt to get some nice photos.
ReplyDeleteA very creative quilt! Congrats! I have entered quilts in our local show, our state show, the county fair and the state fair.
ReplyDeleteHi Patty! I am so thrilled to see your quilt hanging in the show. I have never entered a quilt in any show of type of competition, and I doubt I will. How exciting that Paige won second place. ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteWhat a striking quilt! Congratulations! I have had quilts in guild shows, but have never entered a quilt in a large show. I recently attended the Tokyo International Quilt Show and was in absolute awe. I would love to be able to enter a quilt in a large show someday.
ReplyDeleteAll done - lovely design and colours. I have never entered a quilt in any show -

ReplyDeleteI have never entered a quilt in a show. I love yours and the colors are wonderful! Congratulations. Hugs,
Beautiful quilt and I don't blame you for stalking it! I love most modern quilts and always gain inspiration from them. Nope, I haven't entered any projects into a show. I have joined in on blog challenges, but that's the closest I've come.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your quilt! And congratulations! No, as yet, I have never entered a quilt in a show.
ReplyDeleteI entered a small quilt in our local show a year ago. Nancy A: rangerer@sbcglobal.net
ReplyDeleteI aspire to enter a quilt in a show. QuiltCon was awesome. I saw your wonderful quilt.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Patty. You MQD quilt is an eye catcher and love the circle quilting you did. Never entered a quilt in a quilt show and suspect I never will.
ReplyDeleteI've only entered in local shows nothing big.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful design! I love that you showcased the challenge fabrics by using negative space. I love submitting quilts into shows and had four quilts at this year Quiltcon.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great design. I entered two quilts into Festival of Quilts a few years back now. Sadly I was unable to attend myself but a friend got photos for me. And way back in the mists of time I had a quilt chosen for the Quilters Guild second exhibition which toured the UK. xx
ReplyDeleteOh, that's a beautiful quilt! I would love to win the Make Modern Magazin.
ReplyDeleteLove the quilt you designed and congrats on having it hung at QuiltCon. I have never entered a quilt in a quilt show because up until now, all the quilts I have made I have made for someone special and given away.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on having your quilt hang at Quiltcon. I enter quilts in my local guilds quilt show.
ReplyDeleteI have entered many quilts in local quilt shows and have recently started participating in challenges. It is really fun the way fabric speaks to us and then we have the thrill of completing the project. Congrats on Briar Rose and participating in the challenge at QuiltCon. Janice.snell@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI did enter a quilt in a small show at a quilt shop a couple of years ago. Congrats to you!
ReplyDeleteI love you quilt! You have every right to stalk your own quilt. LOL. And I love your sweater too, any shade of green is my fav!!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is lovely! I have never entered a quilt in a show. I have given all my quilts to family members. My skills need to improve before I venture into a quilt show.
ReplyDeleteThat is such an exciting adventure! It turned out beautiful! I have never had a quilt in a show. I am hoping to have one this summer.
ReplyDeleteFabulous colours in your quilt :) Yes, I entered one quilt into Quiltcon in Austin in 2015 and it did not make it in.
ReplyDeleteI live in a very small town and I did enter some quilts in our annual show. It wasn't in order for it to be judged; I entered my quilts to support the show, so that there would be enough quilts to make it worthwhile to continue having the show. It was fun to see them hanging there, though.
ReplyDeleteI haven't, but perhaps someday! I did encourage (force) my sister to enter one of hers into a small local show near me :) I filled out all the paperwork, delivered it and picked it up, LOL!
ReplyDeleteI did in the first India Quilt Festival this year. Sadly it didn't reach the location on time :(
ReplyDeleteI had several quilts in my local guild's show last May. I was surprised by how many friends and family members came out to support me and the guild. It was very gratifying.
ReplyDeleteWOW what fun. No I have never put anything in a show. Maybe someday.
