I am quite smitten with the koalas from Elizabeth Hartman's Koala pattern. I've made 2 baby quilts from her pattern - the first was a commission quilt and then a second (almost identical) was a gift for my new grand-nephew. (See photo here.)
As a gift for my friend's new grandbaby, I decided to make a single koala and add some hearts. Do you remember those clip on koalas you may have had as a kid? That was the inspiration for this baby quilt.
The quilt finishes 36'' x 36''. Both the green and the red floral were large scraps and the size of the scraps dictated the size of the quilt. It took a bit of graph paper time to figure the best dimensions for the big heart and I'm really happy with how it turned out.
(The photo above shows the colors more true to real life.)
I choose an all over stipple for the quilting. I went with a black for the binding - still second guessing myself on that choice. The backing was a print I had in my stash for years - it was nice to start to put it to use.
There are definitely more koalas in my future - I'm thinking perhaps a pillow for my sewing space!
The hearts are a sweet touch and I definitely remember the clip on koalas. :)
ReplyDeleteKoalas are adorable. I love the addition of the hearts. Well done. Am I dating myself if I remember the clip-on koalas?? LOL
ReplyDeleteI like Elizabeth Hartman's original pattern, but your version with the koala holding the heart really puts a smile on my face.
ReplyDeleteLove this! I do remember those clip-on koalas, and yours is even sweeter! I like how the black binding frames it, for what it's worth.
ReplyDeleteHe's so sweet.
ReplyDeleteJust gorgeous Patty & of course koalas are the best. I'll pop your a photo I took a couple of years ago of a koala who was holding up traffic on a country road(giggle) and I still have one of the clip-on koalas on my kitchen bookstand. We still see them in the tourist hotspots over here for sale. Think I may have to make something like that for an overseas friend if I may. Thanks for sharing, take care & hugs.
ReplyDeleteHaving lived in Australia for 13+ years and seeing Koalas outside my house, I have always had a fondness of them. I have quite a few of the clip-on version in my possession too! One day, I'll give this a go. I love the addition of the hearts.
ReplyDeleteThe koala on the heart is just adorable and such a fun idea! I know this quilt will be very loved!
