Hand Pieced: A QAL Announcement

I am very excited to announce that Kristin Esser from Simply Everyday Handmade and I have been working on a brand new QAL which will start in January 2019!

Kristin and I have both fallen in love with hand piecing for many of the same reasons.  Hand piecing requires the simplest of supplies - fabric, thread and a needle - and you can carry it with you everywhere.  Find yourself waiting a bit for an appointment then you expected?  Make a 4 patch or flying geese block!

With this QAL, our not so secret goal is to create a community of quilters who love to hand piece.  We believe that once you try it, you will be hooked!

The QAL will start with the most basic of quilt blocks (4 patches, HST, flying geese and hour glass) to establish the basics of hand-pieced construction.  The blocks that follow will build on these skills.  We will teach you step by step how to make these units and then assemble them into blocks for our quilt.

Never hand pieced before?  No worries. We'll share step by step tutorials, hits and tips and tell you all about our favorite notions.

While, you will have to wait a little longer for the big quilt reveal, I can tell you there be nine blocks and we will share a couple of alternatives settings to create your own beautiful quilt top.

We will have weekly link-ups and chances to win some awesome prizes from our amazing sponsors!

Excited?

I hope so!

The Hand Pieced QAL will start in January.  Want to make sure you don't miss it?  Join our Hand Pieced Quilt Along Facebook Group.  We'll remind you of new posts as they go live and you can share photos and chat about your experiences as we all build this quilt together.

Subscribe to our newsletter so you'll be among the first to know about the latest QAL news.

I just can't wait to get started!

 Have a wonderful day! Patty

  4. The first quilting class I took in the early 1980s was hand piecing and hand quilting. I enjoyed it but never did any more with my "skills". I will "stay tuned" for more details of your QAL. I have a history of great initial enthusiasm for QALs then I always lose steam, but this one really intrigues me.

  6. I'm in. I started hand-piecing something years ago and put it aside. Maybe this time I will get the project done.

  7. When I first learned to quilt, I learned to hand piece. I enjoyed the entire process. However, at that time over 30 years ago, we had no idea of rotary cutters, mats, rulers let alone specialty rulers. All quilt pieces were copied to quilt pastic via a ruler and No. 2 pencil. Then scissors (non-fabric) were used to cut out the template. The template was then marked on the fabric with a pencil (either a No. 2 or a white pencil) and then the cloth was cut with scisors reserved for only fabric. I started on a king quilt and finished piecing all my blocks. I began lap quilting my blocks into rows. Due to a misunderstanding between my then husband and me, the quilt has never been finished. Is there a list of tools available for the QAL? I thought I might want to let Santa know that I've been an especially good girl this year and what I have on my wish list. I'm excited about hand piecing and maybe even hand quilting again. Thanks. Susan

  10. I'm not a fan of hand piecing, but I have been enjoying EPP. This might be a great little project for me to try.

  11. I've always enjoyed hand sewing but have never hand pieced a larger project. I will keep my eyes open and might possibly join in, especially since it will be after the holidays.

  12. I tried hand piecing when I first started (1997) and it was not super successful. But now seems like a good time to try again!

  18. I would like to try this. It's been many many years since I hand stitched. I started a flower garden quilt, but over the many years, moving and destashing,,,I never finished enough blocks to sew a quilt,,,and the blocks that were finished were lost. I'd like to try it again now that I'm retired and have some time.
