Scrappy Quilt Prep

We've got a family beach vacation coming up this month and I've kitted myself up a fun project.  The key to vacation projects (similar for a quilt retreat) is to have handwork - my Orange Peel quilt - and some mindless piecing.

I've raided my scraps which includes lots of 5" squares from random swaps and project leftovers and kitted up about 600 2 1/2" squares and a pile of background fabric squares. I'll be making twenty-five 16-patch blocks and twenty-four X blocks. The beauty of these blocks is there is very little trimming along the way which means I don't need to carry along large cutting mats and rulers.

My scraps are clearly much scrappier than my EQ8 image but this will at least give you an idea of the quilt. The design is NOT original - I've seen many quilts like this over the years. A recent post here reminded me of the quilt and I decided to give it a try.

The quilt will be a gift to a good friend faced with a long recovery from a serious and sudden illness. I look forward to sewing love and good wishes into every stitch.

Have a wonderful day! Patty

  1. What a kindness this quilt will be for your friend. I'm sure the time you spend thinking of them while you stitch will be appreciated, too. Enjoy your vacation!

  2. Oh how I love this! You've got exactly the right idea about how to prep for time away, or a retreat - have a home-made kit or two at the ready, and handwork. That's exactly how I'm approaching my Central Florida MQG retreat that's next weekend. Though, I'd love to have a big stitch hand quilting project ready, I don't think that's feasible for me. I'm in a virtual workshop this weekend with Sheila Frampton-Cooper, so I have a feeling, I'll be distracted by another new project! So you'll be taking a sewing machine with you to the beach? Something small and portable? I hope you have a fabulous time, and that the weather is perfect for being outdoors.

  3. I love this scrappy design! It may need to go on my To Do list as well, as I'm determined to use the fabric in my stash. Will you be handpiecing the scrappy one, or are you bringing a machine?

  4. It's good to go away with at least some little bit of sewing & what a beautiful gift it will make with many memories for you as you sew & big hug for your friend. Enjoy the time away & some quiet moments to sew. Look forward to seeing the finished product in a future post. Take care & hugs.

  5. That looks like a great plan - blue or scrappy, either one!
