100 yards of gray and counting - Hand quilting Update

When I started my very first hand piecing project of my Double Wedding Ring quilt, I really had no plan in mind.  I intended to make blocks until I ran out of fabric.

Once the quilt was assembled, it wasn't a hard decision to decide to hand quilt my hand pieced project.   After some experimenting, I decided on big-stitch quilting using an awesome collection of 12 wt thread.

(The thread picture makes me so happy.  The colors are just so beautiful and vibrant.)

I have used coordinating thread throughout the project.  I wanted to bold colors used in the rings to stand out from a distance against the gray.   On the rings themselves, I've done stitching in each of the rings at various density for interest.  Now 100 yards and counting of gray later, you can (hopefully) see what is quilted and what is yet to be done.  (Hint look for the pins and ignore the crack on my driveway!)

The texture makes me so happy!

I am using a plastic frame 16'' square with smaller clamps (from another frame) and scrap fabric to protect my hand quilting from the clamps.  In the gray areas, I am quilting "ghost rings".

I've order 3 more spools of gray (50 yards on each) and truly hope to finish this in October.

The quilt design is my own.  The block pattern is Tara Faughnan.  The fabric is Alison Glass Sunprint 2018 plus a gray Painters Palette solid.

I'll be linking up at Brag about Your Beauties Freemotion by the River,   WIP Wednesday's,  Let's Bee SocialMidweek Makers.  Needle and Thread Thursdays, Finish it Up Friday and Finished or Not Friday.

Have a wonderful day! Patty

  4. Oh, Patty, it’s just gorgeous! I don’t have a hand quilting project set up right now, having just finished one last month. I’d let it sit for a long time before picking it up to finally finish, and didn’t realize how much I had missed it! Perhaps if I put together a small quilt, I could have it completed before my November migration. I’m out of girl baby quilts....hmmmm....you are inspiring me with this beautifully designed creation!

  10. This is absolutely beautiful, Patty! I do love the effect you have achieved with the hand quilting and admire you for doing that!! I've only hand-quilted (and hand stitched everything but the borders) one small wall hanging - my first quilt class - and decided that would likely be my last!! I can see where you would want this one hand quilted though! Great job!

  18. You are much braver than I to tackle all that hand quilting. But I'm sure you'll enjoy every stitch!
