Butterfly

A quick fun project to turn a single block into a hot pad for spring!

I made my butterfly block with the specific purpose of turning it into a hot pad but you can do this with any orphan block you've got hanging around.  These fabrics were Northcott Artisan Spirit Shimmer and were part of the QuiltCon swag bag. (I won a swag bag from a giveaway from Quilting Jetgil.)

For my hot pad / potholder,  I used a layer of Insul-bright and a layer of batting and then quilted as I normally would.  I wanted the butterfly to pop so only quilted around it in the ditch.  I'm thinking I'll embroider some antennas to help it look more like a butterfly.

(I just realized from the picture that I've got those fabrics in the wings going different ways.  Oh well, I'll just pretend I intended it to be this way.  You won't tell, will you?)

Have a wonderful day! Patty

  1. She's a beauty! I don't think anybody will notice the fabric for the wings going opposite ways (maybe some quilters).

  2. The hot pad looks great and I'm thrilled the contents of the swag bag you won are being put to use. :) Hand embroidering antenna sound like a fun addition.

  3. I never noticed the difference. It’s because the butterfly is flapping her wings. Hugs,

  4. I didn't notice until you mentioned it! The insulbright really give definition to the the quilting. Outlining the butterfly was nice addition.

  5. It's beautiful! Did you use a pattern for the butterfly? I like that it looks fairly uncomplicated. I don't think the wings going in different directions matters at all! Looks lovely!
