Three new QALs

I love participating in QALs and often downsize the instructions to make a smaller quilt.  For Cheryl's Magnolia Mystery, I decided to use the instructions for the lap size quilt and make the blocks smaller.

How do I do this?

Instructions call for HST which are 2 1/2 '' unfinished or 2'' finished.  To downsize, I cut the finished size in half to create 1'' finished HST (small, yes) and then add back in the 1/2'' for seam allowance to create a 1 1/2'' unfinished.

The gray and navy shown in the upper left are the other two colors in the quilt.

I'll be doing something similar with Yvonne's Wayward Transparency quilt.  Fabric requirements were just released and I'm looking forward to the cutting instructions in October.  As a color way, I'm thinking about using several shades of American Made Brand Solids.  I can't seem to take a picture, though, that shows the contrast to share in today's post.  Think shades of aqua.

But before I commit, I think a trip to my LQS is in order.

Finally I'm going to also try Mellissa's Roundabout.  I'm making a 2 x 2 quilt and think it will be fun in these colors.  I've got my fabrics cut and ready to link-up.

I am doing a 4 block size (in a 2x2 layout).  I've got the fabrics required for each block plus background clipped together.   Different color palette for me and I'm looking forward to it.

Are you tempted by any of these?

Have a wonderful day! Patty

  1. I've never done a quilt along. I'll have to join one sometime.

  2. Oh my, your mystery quilt is going to be so adorable! I want to make a tiny one too!

  3. Wow, you are going to be super busy!!! Love your fabrics for the Roundabout Quilt Along and way to get them all cut out!!! Great job!!!

  4. Figuring out sizing changes for the mystery quilt seems like a challenge! It will be fun to see your downsized versions of these. :)

  5. I'm doing the Magnolia Mystery in queen size. That calls for a lot of background fabric. I was able to get in on a sale. Looking forward to seeing yours in half size.

  6. I am tempted by ALL of these! But I'll be migrating soon and will be away from any machines for one month, so it's time to wind down my projects, sigh!

  7. Quilt alongs are such fun. You've got a good start on your three. I really like the fabric palette you've got cut for Melissa's Roundabout. I've started the Magnolia Mystery and had planned to do Yvonne's, but a recent change at work is going to require lots of over time, so I don't think I'll have time to start that one. I'll just have to enjoy seeing your version come together.

  8. These do look like fun. But I am knee deep in getting rid of scrap stash. So I'll be continuing on my path and checking in with your blog as the fall progresses. Good luck. I'm watching!

  9. It still amazes me that you can downsize the blocks for these QALs. Good luck. I'm playing along with Cheryl and Yvonne.

Thanks for visiting Elm Street Quilts. Looking forward to hearing from you!
