Quilt Con 2019 was held in Nashville and I was able to attend for 3 of the 4 days. I had so much fun and wanted to share my experiences across a couple of blog posts.
This first post will focus on the fact that I had a quilt in the show. And there is a giveaway so keep reading!
Yes, me. (Still a bit amazed by this, honestly.)
Michael Miller had a challenge category for the 2019 show that involved making a quilt from a specific set of fabrics plus any additional Cotton Couture solids you wanted to add. My friend Paige sent me a bundle of fabrics in the mail and challenged me to do the challenge.
Inspired by the Crown of Thorns block my friend Frances was working on (and the pattern I was writing up for her), I decided to use those fabrics to make a modern interpretation of the crown of thorns block.
The result is my quilt Briar Rose. (And no, I didn't purposely choose a sweater that coordinated with my quilt.)
Briar Rose hung at QuiltCon with all the other Michael Miller entries and it was a lot of fun to see how others used the same fabric and came up with very different results. (My friend Paige won 2nd place in this category - see her quilt!)
Now, I will confess to have spent time stalking my own quilt. I waited to the end of the day to catch an empty aisle for the above photo. But the most fun was watching people take photos of the quilt, read the blurb I had written and step back and admire it. It gave me quite a thrill.
Equally as exciting, this quilt will appear in the March issue of Make Modern magazine!!! You can make your very own version in the colors of your choice.

ReplyDeleteHow fun to have a quilt hanging in the show. Several years ago I entered a quilt in our very small county fair, but I've never entered a quilt in a show.
ReplyDeleteThe quilt in my avatar was hanging at an AQS show in Nashville (2003 I think). It was part of a guild challenge, but I was as excited as if I had been juried in on my own! I like your interpretation of the block.

ReplyDeleteYou have a beautiful quilt and I know you were proud to have it in the quilt show. I have entered quilts in a local town fair and had the same feeling!! I have won, first, second, and third places, and loved getting judges comments on them.

Patty, this is so exciting. Your design is very well done! I haven’t entered a quilt in a show. The closest I’ve come is 10 years of 4-H sewing for the county fair when I was young.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt. I have entered in our local guild and our modern guild is doing an exhibit in a museum in March and April. Excited and nervous-love learning new techniques and patterns.
ReplyDeleteThe only time my quilts have ever been in a show was when our quilt ministry group hosted a small show in conjunction with the annual fall harvest festival held at the grange hall across the road from our church. No judging or ribbons, just fun!

I have never entered a quilt in a show, mainly because I question if my binding would pass muster. I cut my bindings at 2.5" and sew on the front with a 3/8" seam and when I flip to the back, the binding is wider than the front - sometimes by quite a bit....when I cut the binding at 2 1/4" then sometimes I have to pull to get it flipped and cover the stitching line. so much trouble getting perfect bindings!

ReplyDeletePatti - it is a great quilt and fun to see it at Quilt Con. It was also fun to meet you in person! I kind of kept low a bit after my fall (I had a badly bruised eye) but I persisted and still did a lot. You look so happy next to your quilt - congrats again on entering the challenge!

ReplyDeleteI have never entered a completed quilt in a show. However, I did have a quilt top as part of a display of Round Robin quilts that my quilt guild did.
How excited to be in the show and congratulations on being selected for the magazine! No, I've never entered a quilt in a show...one day I'd love to though!

Nope! Never entered a quilt show. Only gone to two ... a local one in Moses Lake over 20 years ago and the Sisters quilt show two years ago now. I've thought about trying, then life happens ...

ReplyDeleteHow exciting to see your quilt in the show! Congratulations! I've entered small guild shows, and won a few ribbons there, and best of show once. I also entered a contest in "Mianiature Quilts" magazine, years ago, and that little quilt ended up in a book and in their exhibit at Internation Quilt Festival in Houston. I admit it- I also stalked my quilt to get some nice photos.

ReplyDeleteWhat a striking quilt! Congratulations! I have had quilts in guild shows, but have never entered a quilt in a large show. I recently attended the Tokyo International Quilt Show and was in absolute awe. I would love to be able to enter a quilt in a large show someday.

Beautiful quilt and I don't blame you for stalking it! I love most modern quilts and always gain inspiration from them. Nope, I haven't entered any projects into a show. I have joined in on blog challenges, but that's the closest I've come.

ReplyDeleteI live in a very small town and I did enter some quilts in our annual show. It wasn't in order for it to be judged; I entered my quilts to support the show, so that there would be enough quilts to make it worthwhile to continue having the show. It was fun to see them hanging there, though.
ReplyDeleteI haven't, but perhaps someday! I did encourage (force) my sister to enter one of hers into a small local show near me :) I filled out all the paperwork, delivered it and picked it up, LOL!

ReplyDeleteI had several quilts in my local guild's show last May. I was surprised by how many friends and family members came out to support me and the guild. It was very gratifying.
